The Mountain was founded in 1972 when two lifelong friends from New Jersey decided to follow their dreams, move to New Hampshire and start making belts and belt buckles to sell at festivals and fairs. Their first retail shop opened the same year. After their most popular product became a belt that was adorned with a beautiful mountain scene, the official brand name of The Mountain was decided. In no time at all, The Mountain had opened 30 retail stores in the Mid-Atlantic and expanded its collection to include hand-dyed and printed T-shirts and other products designed for those with alternative cultural lifestyles. Later in the '70s, The Mountain was named an officially licensed printer of tees featuring legends such as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and The Grateful Dead.

In 1996, The Mountain decided to focus solely on printing artwear of the highest quality while focusing on sustainable business practices. It sold all its retail stores and created an online presence to reach more people. To date, The Mountain committed to using 100% recycled cardboard for shipping, has recycled over 4,000,000 gallons of water through its unique waste water purification system, uses only energy-efficient lighting in its corporate buildings and has earned the Oeko-Tex 100% certification for not having any harmful chemicals in its t-shirts and apparel.

After nearly going out of business in 2008 due to the near-collapse of the U.S. economy, The Mountain experienced a rebirth when something unexpected happened. After a college student wrote a satirical review on Amazon of the company's Three Wolf Moon shirt, the review went viral, and so did The Mountain. Today, The Mountain is a go-to retailer for high-quality printed apparel, from T-shirts and hoodies to long-sleeve tees and onesies for children. Each design is created by an artist, with over a dozen regular and featured artists sharing their talents.
